Top 5 Tips for Looking After Your Garden Fence
Fencing is an important part of any property, a well kept fence adds value, privacy, security and style, however an old and tired fence quickly draws negative attention.
No fencing lasts forever, and all comes with an average life expectancy – providing it is looked after! Prolong the life of your garden fence with our top 5 tips, and save yourself the expense of replacing it a lot sooner than you’d like.
1. Make sure you have the equipment
Get all of your equipment and tools needed before starting the job, depending on the age and condition of your fence you may decide you need some, or all of the following:
- Power washer or hose
- Wood stain
- Brushes/rollers
- Protective sheets
- Bleach or wood treatment
2. Protect your garden
With different solutions, bleach and power washers being used, we advise to cover up surrounding grass, plants and garden furniture!
3. Clean
Over the years your fence will gather dirt, moss and mildew. Using a power washer will dislodge any build-up, and help to remove dead surface wood, which will also reduce the likelihood of rot or damp. If you don’t have a power washer, then a hose should work just as well.
To make things easier, you can buy a wood cleaning solution to loosen up the dirt on your fence panels.
4. Let the wood dry
It is very important to allow the wood to dry completely before putting a new seal on it.
5. Protect your fence panels
Use wood stain or exterior wood paint, any normal paint won’t offer the protection and treatment like a wood stain designed specifically for this purpose. Allow to dry for 24 hours before applying a second coat if needed.
Repeat as needed, usually every couple of years but others last longer. You can also help to prolong the life of your fence by clearing leaves, grass and overgrown plants from around the base of the panels, as vegetation rots it can spread through the fence.
If you look after your fence, it can last a lot longer than you think!
