stock fencing around a lagoon

We recently installed lagoon fencing for a long-standing customer, using timber fence posts, stock netting, barbed wire and gates.

Lagoon fencing needs to meet specific specifications in order to be safe and secure, the guidelines on slurry lagoon fencing are stated by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive).

Lagoon Fencing Specifications

The fencing needs to be designed and installed in a way that prevents access from unauthorised people, as well as wildlife and livestock. The lagoon fence needs to be a minimum height of at least 1.3m, mesh or stock netting needs to be small enough to prevent hand or footholds, and at least two strands of barbed wire should be at the top, spaced apart by 100-150mm. The fence needs to be tight and secure, to ensure that it cannot be pushed up from the bottom by stock or wildlife.

Lagoon Gates and Access Points

Gates and access points should provide an equal level of security and deterrence as the fencing. This can be achieved by cladding the outside of the lagoon gate or adding further stock netting to prevent climbing. Gates should also be fitted with two strands of barbed wire at the top, and latches or padlocks and chains to prevent the gates being opened by children, this could be further protected by having the latches on the inside of the gates.

In summary:

  • The fence should be designed to deter access
  • Fencing should be installed professionally and maintained
  • The fence needs to be at least 1.3m high
  • This height includes two strands of barbed wire at the top
  • The barbed wire should be spaced 100-150mm apart
  • Gates and access points should also be designed to prevent access
  • They should be topped by two strands of barbed wire
  • Chains and padlocks or latches should be designed so children are unable to open them

Top 5 Tips for Looking After Your Garden Fence

Fencing is an important part of any property, a well kept fence adds value, privacy, security and style, however an old and tired fence quickly draws negative attention.

No fencing lasts forever, and all comes with an average life expectancy – providing it is looked after! Prolong the life of your garden fence with our top 5 tips, and save yourself the expense of replacing it a lot sooner than you’d like.

1. Make sure you have the equipment

Get all of your equipment and tools needed before starting the job, depending on the age and condition of your fence you may decide you need some, or all of the following:

  • Power washer or hose
  • Wood stain
  • Brushes/rollers
  • Protective sheets
  • Bleach or wood treatment

2. Protect your garden

With different solutions, bleach and power washers being used, we advise to cover up surrounding grass, plants and garden furniture!

3. Clean

Over the years your fence will gather dirt, moss and mildew. Using a power washer will dislodge any build-up, and help to remove dead surface wood, which will also reduce the likelihood of rot or damp. If you don’t have a power washer, then a hose should work just as well.

To make things easier, you can buy a wood cleaning solution to loosen up the dirt on your fence panels.

4. Let the wood dry

It is very important to allow the wood to dry completely before putting a new seal on it.

5. Protect your fence panels

Use wood stain or exterior wood paint, any normal paint won’t offer the protection and treatment like a wood stain designed specifically for this purpose. Allow to dry for 24 hours before applying a second coat if needed.

Repeat as needed, usually every couple of years but others last longer. You can also help to prolong the life of your fence by clearing leaves, grass and overgrown plants from around the base of the panels, as vegetation rots it can spread through the fence.

If you look after your fence, it can last a lot longer than you think!

To replace your fence panels, or have a new fence installed, get in touch. We offer free quotes, photos of each style, and recommendations to help you make the right choice. As a local business based in Nantwich, we are ideally based in the centre of the county giving us easy access to Cheshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and surrounding areas. We have been installing fencing for years, supplied with quality timber from trusted UK suppliers. Call us on 01270 619 147.

With the continuing demand for new housing, Suddenstrike Fencing have been working with a number of housing developers to supply and install domestic fencing and metal fencing. The domestic fencing is used for creating boundaries between the gardens of each house, the most popular choice being featheredge boarded fencing which provides excellent security and privacy. Metal estate fencing is often used on new housing estates as perimeter fencing around the edge of the development, and along the edge of roads, pathways, or park areas.
